Journalists Get Recognition

Several Television and Radio undergraduates have been have been nominated for Region 1 Mark of Excellence awards by The Society of Professional Journalists. Avraham Sandler & Matthew Vann have been nominated for the best television newscast, and Matthew Vann & Seve Chambers have been nominated for best general news reporting.

The Society of professional Journalists seeks to provoke high standards and ethical behavior in the practice of journalism, while encouraging a climate in which Journalism can be practiced freely. They have been encouraging and rewarding excellence in the journalism field since 1909.

The students will be honored and the winners announced at the Mark of Excellence Luncheon on April 9th in Rhode Island. Mike Stanton will serve as the keynote speaker at the luncheon. Stanton is the author of The Prince of Providence: The True Story of Buddy Cianci, America’s Most Notorious Mayor, Some Wiseguys, and The Feds.

BC Alumnus Wins Emmy

Department of Television and Radio MFA alumnus, David Varga, has recently been awarded an Emmy for editing for a NBC News Special, “Inside The Obama White House”. This marks the second time Varga has received the coveted award.

Varga, who graduated from Brooklyn College in 1998, won his first Emmy editing Discovery Channel’s “Global Warming-What You Need To Know With Tom Brokaw”. He has had a long standing career in the field ever since his graduation. His other editing work includes everything from commercials to music videos to reality television.

In addition to editing, Varga has become a skilled music composer in both electronic and acoustic mediums. His compositions have been preformed in theater, film, television, and videogames.
