Young Cheong currently teaches video postproduction and theory through the department of Television and Radio at Brooklyn College. He also teaches in the Film Department at Dong-Kuk University in Seoul, Korea.
Cheong has continuously collaborated with the Department of Asian Studies as well as many other departments for years to not only promote diversity within the campus but also to bring awareness of its impact on the community. In 2009, the Department of Television and Radio received a grant of 2.8 million dollars from the New York City Council and the President of the Borough of Brooklyn. Because of Cheong’s research knowledge, he has proven to be invaluable in his involvement in coordinating the TV Center studio renovation project, which will replace all Standard Definition (SD) production and post-production facilities with High Definition (HD) systems in 2012.
Outside of the campus, Cheong is an Apple Certified Trainer for Final Cut Pro with an extensive knowledge in Avid video editing systems. Because of his expertise, he was invited to train Fox & CNN Editors in migrating from Avid systems to Final Cut Pro.
Cheong's newly released book, Advanced Editing with Apple Final Cut Pro, is the first Korean textbook on using Apple Final Cut Pro 7. The goal of the book is to help students educate themselves on using the software in their classroom whether it is in a Korean university or institutions specializing in post-production. Currently, it is one of the top ten bestselling, media books on the Korean version of Amazon.com.
Cheong was awarded a CUNY Diversity Projects grant that he used to produce a research documentary, A World Within, which highlighted Asian students attending various campuses within the CUNY school system. Cheong’s film, The Smoking Woman, screened at international film festivals, such as Cannes Short Film Corner 2009. He is also a director of photography for the American Penguin Project, which was awarded ' the best online film award' at the Sundance Film Festival in 2006.
As a collaborator for SBS, Korea’s third largest broadcasting company, Cheong also produces weekly programs in the New York area. As technology within the broadcasting industry continues to change at a rapid rate, Cheong hopes to continuously inspire others in adopting these technological advancements.
