Hal Himmelstein

Professor Emeritus.

Hal Himmelstein is a Professor of Television and Radio at Brooklyn College of the City University of New York and Director of the Center for the Study of World Television.  He was appointed Docent in Television Studies at the University of Helsinki, Finland in 2003.

Dr. Himmelstein has published in the areas of television myth and ideology, television advertising, political communication, intercultural broadcasting, and video art.  His book on the state of American television criticism On The Small Screen, published by Praeger in 1981, was chosen as Outstanding Academic Book in Mass Communication, 1981-82 by Wide Angle, The Journal of Film and Video, The Encyclopedia of Television, Almanac:  The Annual of the International Council of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, and numerous anthologies.  He appeared as a frequent guest on the PBS television series All About TV and World:Comm.   Other guest appearances include ABC Wold News Now,  MSNBC’s At Issue, Fox News, Australia’s ABC National Radio, and Italy’s RAI television network.  He was a Fulbright Research Scholar at the University of Helsinki in Gsll 1990, and Visiting Professor, Institute of Television and Radio, Finnish Broadcasting Company (Yleisradio) in Spring 1991.  From 1990-92 he served on the editorial board of Critical Studies In Mass Communications.  He has lectured extensively abroad in Russia, Finland, and Sweden.

Dr. Himmelstein holds the B.A. and M.A. from the University of Kansas, and the Ph.D. from Ohio University.

Served as chairman of the Department of Television Radio for 22 years. Producer and/or director of many programs in television series: Inside the Arts, Film Forum, Exploring Your Museums, and Reporters Panel and was also involved in freelance commercial television production. Served two years in Zambia developing broadcast programming under a United States Agency for International Development contract and did consulting work in the area of international broadcasting. Brooklyn Borough President's representative for development of cable television. External evaluator of several broadcasting curricula for accreditation or self evaluation. Served 17 years as a finalist judge for the national news and public affairs category of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Emmy Awards.

Thirty five years in television, radio and cable industries. Positions included V.P. of Program Practices, CBS Broadcast Group and V.P. of Television Stations Division.

Co-author, with William F. Baker, of "Down the Tube: An Inside Account of the Failure of American Television." Producer/writer/director of many documentaries and other broadcast programs. EMMYs and numerous other awards; author, Television in the Real World. Past President NATAS, New York; Secretary, International Council, NATAS; Publisher of Almanac. Fulbright Scholar. Consultant to numerous broadcast and government organizations on policy, standards, ethics, and the interface between media and public health. Former Chairman of the American Cancer Society (www.cancer.org) and Executive Director of the Center for the Study of World Television, where he convened an International Symposium, Dynamic Development or Aerial Assault? Global Television and its Effects on the Economies and Cultures of the Developing World, at the United Nations in April 1999.
