Brian Dunphy

Lecturer

Brian Dunphy is a cum laude graduate of the University of Amsterdam's International School of Humanities and Social Sciences, with a M.A in American Studies (2004). He also graduated cum laude from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, with a B.A in Dramatic Writing and a double-minor in Shakespeare and Irish Studies (2001).

Brian is finishing his second Masters in Political Science from the New School for Social Research and currently putting book and PhD proposals together for research on Satire in America. His main area of focus is "Political Satire in the Age of Terrorism." He is also in the midst of writing a book on South Park and the show's affect on America.

In 2006, Brian was awarded 1st Prize in the Script Shark Insider Contest and he was a semi-finalist in the Brass Brad Mentor Program.

Brian has been a part of many different projects from film to television to magazines. From 1998-2007, Brian has worked for numerous companies such as The YES Network, ESPN, CNN, Disney, Comedy Central, HBO, Paramount Pictures and Scott Rudin Productions.

Brian Dunphy arrived at Brooklyn College in the Spring of 2007 where he has taught Introduction to Mass Media, Writing for the Documentary and Writing for TV and Radio. He previously taught at St. John's University and Kingsborough Community College in the Communications department.

After proposing a course on the hit television show, South Park, in the fall of 2008 his tireless efforts came to fruition as he began teaching: "South Park & Political Correctness." From the episodes to the reading list, Brian created every aspect of the course with an assist from the department chair, Dr. George Rodman. While teaching the course, Brian made numerous media appearances from the New York Post to National Public Radio and several internet websites who were interested in this fascinating albeit controversial course.

Currently, Brian lives a crazed and hectic life in Brooklyn with his huge DVD collection (and now Blu-ray), reading too many books and all the while studying politics, media, satirical commentary and of course, South Park.

South Park:

"South Park & Political Correctness" is a special topics course in the TV & Radio department, that attempts to analyze, dissect, and use the show as a form of cultural study and significance. By treating South Park  as a worthwhile "literary text", similar to other important works of literature, television, music and film, the class enables the student to discuss various hot blooded issues such as religion, immigration, assisted suicide, big business, the media and the 'War on Terror.' By breaking free of social constraints and taboos, South Park grants the students freedom to investigate what is at the core of  the American zeitgeist such as political correctness and social and cultural partisanship.
